Before We Start: Getting Ready for Our First Woodland Friend!

I am so excited to share our first pattern with you tomorrow. I imagine you are just as anxious to cast on as I am to show you what’s been on my needles!. Before we start our woodland adventure, there are a few important things I want to share to ensure you have a smooth and happy knitting experience.

1. Understanding Your Pattern (Charts vs. Borders)

For each new texture in the Into the Woodlands MKAL, you will receive both a visual chart and row-by-row written instructions.

If you are new to my designs, please keep in mind that the charted and row-by-row instructions do not include the garter stitch borders. I design my patterns this way because the borders are the most common place for knitters to customize their work—whether you want to make them wider, narrower, or even join your blocks as you go.

• The Math: Each pattern will include general instructions for a standard border of 4 rows and 4 stitches in garter stitch. If your cast-on count doesn’t seem to match the chart at first glance, remember it’s because those border stitches are handled separately.

2. Choosing the Right Yarn

While you are free to use any yarn you love, I highly recommend avoiding heavily variegated or very fluffy yarns. These beautiful yarns can unfortunately “hide” the delicate textures we are working so hard to create. Solid or tonal colors will make your woodland friends really shine!
