Block 10: Basket
Hi there! Today’s block features basket stitch, one of the most beautiful beginner patterns, in my opinion. I suddenly remembered one of the judges of the series “The Good Wife” 😉
We are nearing the end of our project! Within a week we will be planning different ways of joining squares. I hope to make it in time with my white ones (I’m very very behind).
See you soon!

You can now purchase the the entire “12 Blocks for Xmas” pattern collection (12 different patterns) HERE or in my ETSY shop HERE. The high quality PDF file includes:
- gauge/tension info and materials
- written instructions
- charted instructions
- row-by-row CONTROL TABLE: specially prepared for novice knitters, with integrated instructions for the block pattern AND edge stitches, to avoid confusion. You can use the table cells to check each row as you finish it, and there is a column for every repeat of the pattern you need to make according to the instructions. A great resource to print and check your progress as you knit.

Basket Stitch

Repeat instructions between brackets as many times as needed. For this block, make them a total of 4 times, horizontally.
Row 1) (RS) [k2, p7, k1], k1
Row 2) p1, [p1, k7, p2]
Row 3) [k2, p7, k1], k1
Row 4) p all sts
Row 5) [p4, k3, p3], p1
Row 6) k1, [k3, p3, k4]
Row 7) [p4, k3, p3], p1
Row 8) p all sts
Basket Stitch – CHART
- Read all odd rows from right to left, and all even rows from left to right.
- Repeat the grey painted part as many times as the pattern calls for (4 times horizontally in the case of this block).

In the instructions, when it says 3 garter sts and then basket for 41, and 3 garter again, does that mean three of garter stitch or 3 individual knit stitches followed by the stitches from the 1st (or whatever) row of the basket pattern, and then 3 normal stitches again, to make one complete row? Thanks!
Hi Ari, let me clarify the instructions for you using the first row of the Basket pattern as an example. Once you knitted the bottom garter band (the first 4 rows of your square) you need to work the 47 sts as stated: 3 garter stitches (that will form one of the side borders), 41 sts in the Basket pattern, and 3 garter sts to end the row (which will form the other side border). So, in row 1 you’ll work: 3 k (garter border), [k2, p7, k1] four times (that is: k2, p7, k3, p7, k3, p7, k3, p7, k1), then k1, and your final k3 for the garter border.
I know this may be confusing if you just started following my patterns, but I always try to put between brackets the part of the pattern that should be repeated in each row. This way, if anyone wants to adjust the design for a larger amount of sts, the process will be very straightforward: just add more repetitions of that part. I hope this helps. xo
