Hello 😊 Another set, another free dishcloth pattern! But first, let me share some thoughts.
I was recently asked why I include several options for following each of my patterns. So I decided to add a little explanation to this post (and a downloadable PDF!)
Since every knitter is different, I design each square with multiple options for following the pattern: charts, written instructions and control tables. I think that covers the different levels (and moods!) you can find yourself in when you pick up your needles.
Read more: FREE dishcloth pattern from my NEW Set N°12Beginners would probably benefit from control tables because each one includes directions for EACH and EVERY stitch of the row.
And more experienced knitters could also find useful a pattern that can be followed disregarding the amount of attention we can put into it. Personally, I can follow correctly a chart ONLY if I’m dedicating my whole attention to knitting. If I’m also watching some TV or listening to an audiobook, I really need to follow written instructions. Otherwise, I make a lot of mistakes!
So there’s the reason behind it!
And, as an example, I’m including all three options for today’s dishcloth pattern (#1 of my Dishcloth Set N°12): chart, written instructions and control table. Choose the one you prefer 😉
Happy knitting!

FREE dishcloth pattern: General Instructions
– CO 43 sts with US 7 (4.5 mm) needles.
| I always cast on and bind off stitches with larger needles than I use for the main work. This prevent my cast on and bind off rows from being too tight. |
– With US 6 (4 mm) needles, knit 4 rows.
| Slip first stitch on every row as if you were to knit it, but without knitting it (except on the first row). It will form a neat and sturdy border. |
– Continue working the next 55 rows as follows:
4 garter sts, DIAMONDS and SQUARES pattern over 35 sts, 4 garter sts.
Work 4 times the DIAMONDS and SQUARES pattern complete and then rows 1) to 7) again.
– Knit 4 rows.
– Bind off with US 7 (4.5 mm) needle. Cut yarn and weave in ends.
– Block your square to its final measures (optional).
DIAMONDS and SQUARES pattern – Written instructions
- The stitch pattern repeats over 12 sts and 12 rows.
- I added 11 more sts to reach 35 sts for the internal space.
- Repeat instructions between brackets a total of 2 times.
In case you are new to my designs, I’ll explain the use of the brackets in them. The instructions between brackets should be repeated as many times in the row as you can do them in their entirety. And then proceed to work the instructions after the brackets for the remaining sts.
