Lace into Spring MKAL: Blocks 7 & 8

A Tale of Flowers and Forests

Welcome to a very special double-release day for our Lace into Spring KAL! As we move closer into the season, our garden is growing, and today we are adding two distinct textures to our collection: the lush, flowing Peony Path and the elegant, structured Silver Birch.

Peony Path (Block 7) captures the organic beauty of a garden in full bloom, featuring rounded lace motifs that mimic delicate petals unfolding in the sun. In contrast, Silver Birch (Block 8) draws inspiration from the quiet strength of the forest, using vertical columns of eyelets to recreate the sophisticated texture of birch bark.

These two blocks were designed to complement one another—balancing soft curves with sharp lines. Whether you are following along with the KAL or looking for the perfect lace square for a standalone project, these patterns offer a rewarding knitting experience that brings the beauty of nature right to your needles.

Checklist for Success

  1. Download the free guide “Chart Symbols and Abbreviations” from the hub page. It will be a useful companion throughout your knitting.
  2. Use stitch markers to separate your 5-stitch garter borders from the 55-stitch lace space, and to mark each repetition of the pattern.

General Instructions for Block 7: Peony Path

  1. Cast on sts

CO 65 sts with US 6 (4 mm) needles.
I always cast on and bind off stitches with larger needles than I use for the main work. This prevents my cast on and bind off rows from being too tight.

  2. Garter stitch bottom border

With US 4 (3.5 mm) needles, knit 6 rows.
Slip first stitch on every row as if you were to knit it, but without knitting it (except on the first row). It will form a neat and sturdy border.

  3. Main pattern with garter stitch side borders

Continue working the next 93 rows as follows:
5 garter sts, Peony Path pattern over 55 sts, 5 garter sts
Work the 24-row pattern 3 times complete, and then rows 1) to 21) again.
You can follow either the row-by-row written instructions or the chart for the ‘Peony Path’ lace pattern.

  4. Garter stitch top border

    Knit 6 rows.

  5. Bind off

Bind off all sts with a US 7 (4.5 mm) needle. Cut yarn and weave in ends.

  6. Blocking

Block your square to its final measures (approx. 10.5 to 11” / 27 to 28 cm).

  • Over 12 sts and 24 rows. I added 7 more stitches to centre the motif and complete the internal space of 55 sts.
  • Repeat instructions between brackets a total of 4 times.

Note: use stitch markers to signal each repeat, and to separate the main pattern from the 5-stitch border. This way, you can notice easily if you missed some stitch in the row.

General Instructions for Block 8: Silver Birch

3. Preparation Rows

Work the following two rows in preparation for the pattern. Repeat the instructions between brackets a total of 3 times.

Prep Row 1) (RS) 5 garter sts, [p1, k16, p1], p1, 5 garter sts

Prep Row 2) 5 garter sts, k1, [k1, p16, k1], 5 garter sts

4. Main pattern with garter stitch side borders

Continue working the next 90 rows as follows:

5 garter sts, Silver Birch pattern over 55 sts, 5 garter sts
You can follow either the row-by-row written instructions or the chart for the Silver Birch lace pattern.

Note: Work the 10-row pattern 9 times complete.

5. Finishing Row

Work this row once before starting the top garter stitch border. This transition row stabilizes the fabric, ensuring your final border looks neat and even without the “wonky” stitches that can sometimes occur when knitting directly into the yarn overs of the previous pattern row. 🙂

Finishing Row (RS) 5 garter sts, [p1, k16, p1] repeat between brackets a total of 3 times, p1, 5 garter sts (65 sts)

Remember to block your squares!

Lace only truly ‘blooms’ once it is off the needles. To get the crisp definition you see in the photos, I highly recommend wet blocking your squares.
