Lace into Spring MKAL: Blocks 10 & 11

Spring is truly in full bloom on our needles today! I am thrilled to share a very special double release for our Lace into Spring collection: Sweet Alyssum (Pattern 10) and Winding Willow (Pattern 11).

Sweet Alyssum is a dense, intricate floral lace that mimics a cluster of tiny blooms, while Winding Willow offers a serene, rhythmic counterpoint with its elegant, swaying eyelet columns. Together, they create a beautiful balance for any springtime project.

A Quick Update for your Library

While finalizing the Sweet Alyssum chart, I realized the ‘Center Double Decrease’ symbol was missing from our master Chart Symbols and Abbreviations guide.

I have updated the guide to be 100% complete!

  • If you use the Hub: Please head over to the Lace into Spring Hub Page to download the newest version of the Abbreviations PDF.
  • If you purchased your entry in Oh La Lana! Shop or Ravelry: The updated guide is already waiting for you in your account, along with today’s two new pattern files! 🧶✨
  • If you are a Pattern Club+ Member: You will receive the updated guide along all new patterns for this week (including today’s lace blocks!), with our Friday newsletter 🧶✨

Checklist for Success

  1. Download the free guide “Chart Symbols and Abbreviations” from the hub page. It will be a useful companion throughout your knitting –> NEW version available!
  2. Use stitch markers to separate your 5-stitch garter borders from the 55-stitch lace space, and to mark each repetition of the pattern.
  3. Share your progress! Tag me @ohlalana.designs so I can see your squares coming to life!

General Instructions for Block 10: Sweet Alyssum

  1. Cast on sts

CO 65 sts with US 6 (4 mm) needles.
I always cast on and bind off stitches with larger needles than I use for the main work. This prevents my cast on and bind off rows from being too tight.

  2. Garter stitch bottom border

With US 4 (3.5 mm) needles, knit 6 rows.
Slip first stitch on every row as if you were to knit it, but without knitting it (except on the first row). It will form a neat and sturdy border.

  3. Main pattern with garter stitch side borders

Continue working the next 92 rows as follows:
5 garter sts, Sweet Alyssum pattern over 55 sts, 5 garter sts
Work the 12-row pattern 7 times complete, and then rows 1) to 8) again.
You can follow either the row-by-row written instructions or the chart for the ‘Sweet Alyssum’ lace pattern.

  4. Finishing Row

Knit all stitches as a finishing row, before starting the top garter stitch border. This transition row stabilizes the fabric, ensuring your final border looks neat and even without the ‘wonky’ stitches that can sometimes occur when knitting directly into the yarn overs of the previous pattern row.

  5. Garter stitch top border

    Knit 6 rows.

  6. Bind off

Bind off all sts with a US 7 (4.5 mm) needle. Cut yarn and weave in ends.

  7. Blocking

Block your square to its final measures (approx. 10.5 to 11” / 27 to 28 cm).

Sweet Alyssum pattern – Row-by-row instructions

  • Over 8 sts and 12 rows. I added 7 more stitches to centre the motif and complete the internal space of 55 sts.
  • Repeat instructions between brackets a total of 6 times.

Note: Using stitch markers to separate repeats in this pattern can be tricky, as some yarn overs fall immediately adjacent to the marker. Be extra mindful of your stitch count as you work through these rows to keep your Alyssum blooms perfectly aligned.

Remember to block your squares!

Lace only truly ‘blooms’ once it is off the needles. To get the crisp definition you see in the photos, I highly recommend wet blocking your squares.
