STAIRWAY knitting stitch pattern
This post was originally published in 2020 and has been updated with a new high-resolution chart, photo, and improved instructions for 2026.
Take your knitting to the next level with the Stairway knitting stitch. This striking geometric pattern creates a rhythmic, stepped texture that adds wonderful visual movement to any project. And, since it is a beginner-friendly ‘knit and purl’ design, is perfect for building your skills. Whether you’re working on a modern baby blanket or a textured washcloth, the Stairway stitch provides a clean, architectural finish that stands out.
Tip:Â Because the Stairway stitch has a strong stockinette base, it may curl at the edges if used for a scarf. For a perfectly flat finish, I recommend adding a 3-stitch garter border on each side and blocking your finished piece!
