Lace into Spring MKAL: Block 18
As we reach the final chapters of our Lace into Spring MKAL, our garden is full of movement! I am delighted to introduce Clue #18: Swaying Canopy. This design features a rhythmic, diagonal lace pattern that mimics the gentle sway of treetops in a warm April wind. The repeating eyelets create a light, airy fabric with a sophisticated drape, making it a standout addition to your sampler blanket. Whether you are finishing your masterpiece or starting a new spring wrap, this pattern offers a meditative knit that is as refreshing as a walk through the woods.

General Instructions for Block 18: Swaying Canopy
- Cast on sts
CO 65 sts with US 6 (4 mm) needles.
I always cast on and bind off stitches with larger needles than I use for the main work. This prevents my cast on and bind off rows from being too tight. - Garter stitch bottom border
With US 4 (3.5 mm) needles, knit 6 rows.
Slip first stitch on every row as if you were to knit it, but without knitting it (except on the first row). It will form a neat and sturdy border. - Main pattern with garter stitch side borders
Continue working the next 93 rows as follows:
5 garter sts, Swaying Canopy pattern over 55 sts, 5 garter sts
Work the 10-row pattern 9 times complete, and then rows 1) to 3) again.
You can follow either the row-by-row written instructions or the chart for the ‘Swaying Canopy’ lace pattern. - Garter stitch top border
Knit 6 rows.
- Bind off
Bind off all sts with a US 7 (4.5 mm) needle. Cut yarn and weave in ends.
- Blocking
Block your square to its final measures (approx. 10.5 to 11” / 27 to 28 cm).

Swaying Canopy pattern – Row-by-row instructions
- Over 13 sts and 10 rows. I added 3 more stitches to centre the motif and complete the internal space of 55 stitches.
- Repeat instructions between brackets a total of 4 times.
Note: Using stitch markers to separate repeats in this pattern can be tricky, as some yarn overs fall immediately adjacent to the marker. Be extra mindful of your stitch count as you work through these rows 🙂

Remember to block your squares!
Lace only truly ‘blooms’ once it is off the needles. To get the crisp definition you see in the photos, I highly recommend wet blocking your squares.
