TRIANGLES stitch pattern

This post was originally published in 2018 and has been updated with new charts, high-resolution photos, and improved instructions for 2026.

There is nothing a knitter loves more than a “magic” stitchโ€”one that looks just as beautiful on the back as it does on the front. The Triangles stitch is exactly that. By balancing geometric blocks of knit and purl, this pattern creates a bold, interlocking motif that is completely reversible.

The result is a thick, squishy fabric with a modern architectural feel. Itโ€™s the perfect choice for those projects where you can’t control which side showsโ€”like a cozy wrap thrown over your shoulders or a baby blanket that gets tumbled around. Itโ€™s clean, graphic, and a joy to knit.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Is this stitch truly reversible?

Yes! Because the pattern is made of solid geometric blocks of knits and purls, the back of the work is a perfect mirror image of the front. There is no “wrong side,” making it ideal for scarves, cowls, and blankets.

Does this pattern lay flat?

One of the best features of the Triangles stitch is its stability. Because it uses an equal balance of knit and purl stitches, the fabric doesn’t have the natural “curl” that stockinette stitch does. It lays beautifully flat right off the needles, though a light blocking will really sharpen those geometric corners.

What kind of projects do you recommend for this?

Since it is reversible and lay-flat, it is a “superstar” stitch for:

  • Scarves and Wraps: No more worrying about the “ugly side” showing.
  • Washcloths: The texture provides a great scrubbing surface.
  • Modern Blankets: It creates a sophisticated, store-bought look that is entirely handmade.

Is it difficult to keep track of the pattern?

Not at all! After the first few rows, you will start to see the “staircase” of the triangles forming. Youโ€™ll quickly learn to “read” your knitting, seeing exactly where the next purl block needs to start based on the row below it.

Can I adjust the size of the triangles?

Yes! Once you understand the “step” (how many stitches you shift the purl row each time), you can easily scale these triangles up for a chunky throw or down for a delicate accessory. Itโ€™s a very flexible motif for designers and makers alike.
