“Alerce” is the name of a tall tree species native to the Andes region and also a reference to my most beloved National Park in Argentina: Los Alerces. I love forests, mountains and lakes, and therefore Los Alerces National Park is a paradise to me!
My ALERCES cowl is knitted in the round.
You can work it with bulky yarn to make it stiff (as I did), which will make it perfect for winter nights. It will cover you up to the nose like a shield! Look:
It has some “Mad hatter hat” look, isn’t it?
Of course, you can also make it using aran or worsted yarn if you prefer your cowl to have more drape 😉
Skill level: intermediate (because of the cabled pattern)

PATTERN DETAILS
FINISHED MEASUREMENTS
Length: 7’’ (18 cm)
Width (taken flat, without stretching): 10.25’’ (26 cm)
Of course, this will vary if your tension is different than mine or if you decide to knit more repeats of the charts or to make it with another yarn weight and needle size.
MATERIALS
• 1 straight needle US 10.5 (6.5 mm) for Casting on and Binding Off sts.
• 1 US 10 (6 mm) circular needle.
• Approx. 130 yds (119 m) of bulky yarn. I used BERKSHIRE BULKY from Valley Yarns (85% Wool, 15 % Alpaca) in “Hunter” color.
• Cable needle.
• 1 stitch marker.
• Tapestry needle to weave in yarn ends and scissors.
GAUGE
13.5 sts x 19 rows in stocking st with US 10 (6 mm) needles = 4” x 4” (10 cm x 10 cm)
ABBREVIATIONS
• CO: cast on
• BO: bind off
• RS: right side
• WS: wrong side
• st: stitch
• k: knit
• p: purl
• kfb: knit the front and back loops of the same st. This produces one increase.
• k2tog: knit together the next 2 sts (one decrease).
• 2B, k2, k2B: slip 2 sts to cable needle and hold in back, k next 2 sts, k 2 sts from cable needle.
• 2F, k2, k2F: slip 2 sts to cable needle and hold in front, k next 2 sts, k 2 sts from cable needle.

1. CO 90 sts with US 10.5 (6.5 mm) needles.
| I always cast on and bind off stitches with larger needles than I use for the main work. This prevent my cast on and bind off rows from being too tight. |
2. Transfer the stitches to your US 10 (6 mm) circular needle, place a stitch marker, and join in the round while you work 1 repeat of Pattern 1 (see below for written and charted instructions).
| ALTERNATIVELY you can CO 91 sts and knit the first and last stitches together when you join in the round. That will produce a more secure bond. |
3. Work 1 k row and 1 p row.
4. Next row: 1 k row while increasing 6 sts as follows:
k7, (kfb, k15) 5 times, kfb, k8 (now you have 96 sts in your needle).
5. Work in Pattern 2 until you reach the desired length for your cowl (see below for written and charted instructions of Pattern 2). I worked 3 times the pattern complete + row 1) again.
6. Next row: 1 k row while decreasing 6 sts as follows:
k7, (k2tog, k14) 5 times, k2tog, k7 (now you have 90 sts in your needle).
7. Work 1 repeat of Pattern 1 (see below for written and charted instructions).
8. Work 1 k row and 1 p row.
9. Bind off with US 10.5 (6.5 mm) needle. Cut yarn and weave in ends.
