BUTTERFLY dishcloth knitting pattern – Block 2 of Beginner Blanket MKAL 2020

The butterfly is one of my favourite designs; it took quite some time to perfect the delicate shape of the wings, but I am so pleased with the result! Whether you are looking for a beautifulย dishcloth patternย or a texturedย blanket block, this design adds a lovely touch of nature to any project.

This pattern is specifically designed to be beginner-friendly. By using only knit and purl stitches, you can create a detailed “monarch” silhouette that stands out beautifully against the smooth background.

New to charts?ย I have updated this pattern with my new high-contrast “Grey Square” chart system. If you need a hand learning how to follow the grid, visit ourย How to Read a Knitting Chartย guide in the Academy for my best tips and tricks!

ABBREVIATIONS

  • CO: cast on
  • RS: right side
  • WS: wrong side
  • st: stitch
  • k: knit
  • p:ย purl

INSTRUCTIONS

โ€“ CO 43 sts with US 7 (4.5 mm) needles.

I always cast on and bind off stitches with larger needles than I use for the main work. This prevents my cast-on and bind-off rows from being too tight.

โ€“ With US 6 (4 mm) needles, knit 4 rows.

Slip the first stitch on every row (except the first) as if you were to knit it, but without knitting it. This creates a neat, sturdy border that ensures your work will last for years.

โ€“ Continue working as follows:

4 garter sts, BUTTERFLY pattern over 35 sts, 4 garter stsโ€‹ (55 rows).

โ€“ Knit 4 rows.

โ€“ Bind off with US 7 (4.5 mm) needle. Cut yarn and weave in ends.
