SKILL LEVEL: Beginner

TECHNIQUES USED: knit, purl

FINISHED MEASUREMENTS (I wrote instrctions in 2 sizes):

  • Stroller / Baby size: 30.75” (78 cm) x 35.5” (90 cm)
  • Crib / Throw size: 45” (114 cm) x 60” (152 cm)

Of course, you can modify these measures very easily by adding more repeats of the Zig Zag Seed / Moss Stitch Pattern. Leave me a message in the comments box if you need help.

To make the crib size you need to work back and forth in a circular needle with a long cable (to accommodate all the stitches). If you don’t know how to do this, you can look my article about it here: How to Knit Back and Forth in a circular needle.

At the end of this post, you can find a link to download the printer-friendly version with the basic instructions.

I hope you like it!

ABBREVIATIONS

  • CO: cast on
  • RS: right side / WS: wrong side
  • st: stitch
  • k: knit
  • p: purl

GAUGE / TENSION
14 sts x 18 rows in stocking st with US 10 (6 mm) needles = 4” x 4” (10 cm x 10 cm)

MATERIALS

  • 1 straight needle US 10.5 (6.5 mm) for Casting On and Binding Off sts.
  • 1 pair of straight needles US 10 (6 mm) for Stroller size.
  • 1 US 10 (6 mm) circular knitting needle at least 32’’ (81 cm) long for Crib Size. The circular needle is used to accommodate the large amount of stitches; you’ll knit the blanket back and forth on the needle. You can see the following article if you are not sure how to do it: “How to knit back and forth in a circular needle”.
  • Super Chunky / Super Bulky weighted yarn (OR worsted / aran yarn USED DOUBLE (double the yardage)): approx. 672 yds (615 m) for STROLLER / BABY SIZE and approx. 1660 yds (1518 m) for CRIB SIZE.
  • Tapestry needle to weave in yarn ends and scissors.
  • OPTIONAL: stitch markers.

INSTRUCTIONS

1) STROLLER / BABY SIZE

– CO 97 sts with US 10.5 (6.5 mm) needles.

I always cast on and bind off stitches with larger needles than I use for the main work. This prevent my cast on and bind off rows from being too tight.

– With US 10 (6 mm), work 10 rows in Seed / Moss Stitch (Seed Stitch bottom border; see the Stitch Glossary at the end of the pattern).

Slip first stitch on every row as if you were to knit it, but without knitting it (except on the first row). It will form a nicer border.

– Continue working as follows:

8 Seed sts, Zig Zag Seed / Moss st Pattern over the next 81 sts, 8 Seed sts (you can find the Chart AND Row-by-row instructions for the Zig Zag Seed Pattern at the end of this file. Use the one you prefer 😊).

– When you reach a total length of 33.75’’ (86 cm), work 10 rows in Seed / Moss Stitch (Seed Stitch upper border).

– Bind off with US 10.5 (6.5 mm) needle. Cut yarn and weave in ends.

2) CRIB SIZE

– CO 141 sts with US 10.5 (6.5 mm) needles. You can also cast on your sts LOOSELY and directly onto your circular US 10 (6 mm) needle.

I always cast on and bind off stitches with larger needles than I use for the main work. This prevent my cast on and bind off rows from being too tight.

– With US 10 (6 mm) circular needles, work 14 rows in Seed / Moss Stitch (Seed Stitch bottom border; see the Stitch Glossary at the end of the pattern).

Slip first stitch on every row as if you were to knit it, but without knitting it (except on the first row). It will form a nicer border.

– Continue working as follows:

10 Seed / Moss sts, Zig Zag Seed / Moss Pattern over the next 121 sts, 10 Seed / Moss sts (you can find the Chart AND Row-by-row instructions for the Zig Zag Seed Pattern at the end of this file. Use the one you prefer 😊).

– When you reach a total length of 58.25’’ (148 cm), work 14 rows in Seed / Moss Stitch (Seed Stitch upper border).

– Bind off with US 10.5 (6.5 mm) needle. Cut yarn and weave in ends.

  1. Hi, I found this pattern on @freeknittingpattern on Instagram. I would love to make the crib size blanket for my baby. I am a beginner. In your instructions you mention slipping the first stitch of every row knitwise. Should I do this regardless of the moss/seed pattern? In other words, should I slip regardless of whether the pattern says k or p? Your response would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for this beautiful free pattern!

    1. Hello Jen,

I’m so happy you like it!

Yes, that’s right, you should slip it knitwise regardless in order to obtain a sturdy border. Sometimes you will slip the first st knitwise and then knit the next stitch. I know that doing that in a seed border could feel wrong, but trust me 🙂

I hope you enjoy knitting the blanket and let me know how it goes!

      XO
      Cecilia
