Letter A: Knitted alphabet square instructions

Abbreviations:
- CO: cast on
- RS: right side
- WS: wrong side
- st(s): stitch(es)
- k: knit
- p: purl
The Pattern: General Instructions
- Cast on sts
CO 43 sts with US 7 (4.5 mm) needles.
I always cast on and bind off stitches with larger needles than I use for the main work. This prevents my cast on and bind off rows from being too tight. - Garter stitch bottom border
With US 6 (4 mm) needles, knit 4 rows.
Slip first stitch on every row as if you were to knit it, but without knitting it (except on the first row). It will form a neat and sturdy border. - Main pattern with garter stitch side borders
Continue working the next 55 rows as follows:
4 garter sts, A knitting pattern over 35 sts, 4 garter sts
You can follow either the row-by-row written instructions or the chart below for the A knitting pattern. - Garter stitch top border
Knit 4 rows.
- Bind off
Bind off all sts with a US 7 (4.5 mm) needle. Cut yarn and weave in ends.
- (Optional) Blocking
Block your square to its final measures.

I have wanted an alphabet and there it is………….. Thank you!
You’re welcome, Janet! I already finished the B dishcloth; check my blog on Monday 😉
looking forward to trying these
Why does it say cast on 43 and In the pattern only has 35 stitches in a row
Hello Mary,
There are 35 sts in the center (where the letter is) and 4 garter sts at each side to make the borders.
Happy knitting!
Hello! Hope you are well these patterns are amazing! Do you still have the original A pattern? I used these patterns to make a baby blanket for my fsil (it came out great and I learned a lot!), and my cousin loved it so much that now she wants one too! She has an older style so the old A fits her vibe more. So if it’s possible to use the old A pattern that would be amazing, if not no worries!
Hi Kathleen! I do have it, don’t worry. I’ll search for the file and include the traditional style in the post too. I still want to give it a little refresh and make the chart more legible, though 😅 Give me a few hours and come back to find it!
Hello again! The Classic Letter A now has its new post and chart 😃✨🧶 Check it out: https://ohlalana.com/letter-a-classic-alphabet/
