Adults Hat Knitting Pattern

ABBREVIATIONS

  • CO: cast on
  • BO: bind off
  • RS: right side
  • WS: wrong side
  • st: stitch
  • k: knit
  • p: purl
  • yo: yarn over
  • k2tog: knit 2 sts together
  • skp: slip 1 st as if to knit, knit 1 st, pass the slipped st over
  • 1B, k2, p1B: slip 1 st to cable needle and hold in back, k next 2 sts, p1 from cable needle.
  • 2F, p1, k2F: slip 2 sts to cable needle and hold in front, p next st, k2 from cable needle.
  • 2F, k2, k2F: slip 2 sts to cable needle and hold in front, k next 2 sts, k2 sts from cable needle.
  • 2B, k2, k2B: slip 2 sts to cable needle and hold in back, k next 2 sts, k2 sts from cable needle.
  • 2F, p2, k2F: slip 2 sts to cable needle and hold in front, p next 2 sts, k2 sts from cable needle.
  • 2B, k2, p2B: slip 2 sts to cable needle and hold in back, k next 2 sts, p2 sts from cable needle.
  • SK2P: slip 1 st knit-wise, k2tog, pass the slipped st over

MATERIALS

  • 1 straight needle US 6 (4 mm) for Casting on and Binding Off sts.
  • 1 pair of straight needles US 4 (3.5 mm).
  • approx. 182 yds (166 m) of DK (8 ply / 11 wpi) yarn.
  • cable needle
  • tapestry needle and scissors.
  • stitch markers

GAUGE / TENSION

  • 22 to 24 sts in stocking st with US 4 (3.5 mm) needles = 4” (10 cm)

INSTRUCTIONS

– CO 133 sts with US 6 (4 mm) needles.

– With US 4 (3.5 mm) needles, work in k1/p1 rib for 3’’ (8 cm). This will be a long rib that you can use folded. If you prefer it, you can work in rib for a shorter length.

– Once you finish the rib, work your stitches as follows (see Stitch Glossary at the end to find the charted and written versions of each pattern) until you reach a total length of 8.5’’ (21.5 cm):

– 1 garter stitch
– 2 reverse stocking stitch (2 sts)
– SMALL CABLE pattern (6 sts)
– 4 reverse stocking stitch (4 sts)
– BIG CABLE pattern (16 sts)
– 4 reverse stocking stitch (4 sts)
– SMALL CABLE pattern (6 sts)
– 3 reverse stocking stitch (3 sts)
– WAVES pattern (4 sts)
– 3 reverse stocking stitch (3 sts)
– LACE PANEL pattern (9 sts)
– 3 reverse stocking stitch (3 sts)
– WAVES pattern (4 sts)

– When you reach a total length of 8.5’’ (21.5 cm) work the following decrease rows while you keep working each stitch pattern as before:

Decrease row 1) (RS) p2tog on each reverse stocking stitch band
(total: 13 decreases; 120 sts remain on needle)

– Work 3 rows as before, following the directions of each pattern.

Decrease row 2) (RS) p2tog on each reverse stocking stitch band EXCEPT the first and the last one

(total: 11 decreases; 109 sts remain on needle)

– Work 1 row (WS) as before, following the directions of each pattern.

Decrease row 3) (RS) p2tog on each reverse stocking stitch band that still has 2 sts left AND p2tog at the beginning and at the end of each BIG CABLE

(total: 8 decreases; 101 sts remain on needle)

– Work 1 row (WS) as before, following the directions of each pattern.

Decrease row 4) (RS) k tog 2 by 2 all WAVE sts (that is, work each set as k2tog, k2tog), all LACE PANEL sts (k2tog, k2tog, p1, k2tog, k4tog) and all BIG CABLE sts (depending on which row you are, you can use k2tog or p2tog to decrease).

(total: 28 decreases; 73 sts remain on needle)

Next row) (WS) p2tog all sts corresponding to WAVE and LACE PANEL. Also p2tog or k2tog all BIG CABLE sts
(total: 16 decreases; 57 sts remain on needle)

– Cut the yarn leaving a long tail.

– Using a tapestry needle pass the yarn inside the remaining 20 sts and slide them off your knitting needle. Pull tightly to close and sew your hat using the garter stitch at each border as guides (you can se a photo tutorial for this in my YOU ARE LOVED hat post).
