In my newest Dishcloth Set I included one pattern that has quickly became my go-to dishcloth to knit when I’m in need of a new one or I want to make a last minute gift. It is a very simple combination of garter, stocking and seed stitch rows but has a very interesting, textured look.
The pattern is also very forgiving if you make a mistake (maybe knitting a row instead of purling it, for example) which, along with the fact that only uses knits and purls, turns out into a wonderful pattern for beginner knitters. You can also make it a lot bigger and give it a go as a blanket project!

Easy beginner dishcloth pattern: General Instructions
– CO 43 sts with US 7 (4.5 mm) needles.
| I always cast on and bind off stitches with larger needles than I use for the main work. This prevent my cast on and bind off rows from being too tight. |
– With US 6 (4 mm) needles, knit 4 rows.
| Slip first stitch on every row as if you were to knit it, but without knitting it (except on the first row). It will form a neat and sturdy border. |
– Continue working the next 55 rows as follows:
4 garter sts, EASY beginner pattern over 35 sts, 4 garter sts.
Work 4 times the EASY beginner pattern complete and then rows 1) to 7) again.
– Knit 4 rows.
– Bind off with US 7 (4.5 mm) needle. Cut yarn and weave in ends.
– Block your square to its final measures (optional).
Easy beginner pattern – Written instructions
- The stitch pattern is a combination of entire rows of garter stitch, stocking stitch and seed stitch. This combination, detailed below, repeats every 12 rows.
- In case you are new to my designs, I’ll explain the use of the brackets in them. The instructions between brackets should be repeated as many times in the row as you can do them in their entirety. And then proceed to work the instructions after the brackets for the remaining sts. For our current pattern this means that in rows 4, 5 and 6, you should repeat the instructions between brackets (that is, k 1 stitch and p 1 stitch) for the entire internal space of 35 sts until you have one stitch left, and then k that one. After that, you can make your garter border of 4 sts.
Row 1) (RS) k all sts
Row 2) p all sts
Row 3) k all sts
Row 4) [k1, p1], k1
Row 5) [k1, p1], k1
Row 6) [k1, p1], k1
Row 7) k all sts
Row 8) p all sts
Row 9) k all sts
Row 10) k all sts
Row 11) k all sts
Row 12) k all sts
Easy beginner pattern – Charted instructions
- Read all odd rows from right to left, and all even rows from left to right.
- Repeat the grey painted part as many times as needed.
